Science and technology

Posted: January 26, 2011 in Uncategorized

So much of contemporary technology is based on the sciences, particularly such disciplines as physics, chemistry, biology, and other sciences that deal with the study, measurement, and understanding of natural phenomena. Learn about the technological advancements and scientific achievements that so greatly influence our lifestyle and impact our lives.

A good argument to halt human advancement in technology is that if we continue creating technologies and researching sciences to re-create living matter (cloning), people will not want to die, and will clone themselves, and if they do that, combined with the new off-spring of other human beings, the world will become hugely overpopulated, than it is even now, and the world will not be able to accommodate the basic needs of everyone.

This technology can also prove useful, if a comet or meteor collides with the Earth, and wipes out our atmosphere, we need to colonise another planet to continue living. Other technologies that we create later on in the human race future may also be very useful for our survival and/or daily life, for example, if we ever discover means of teleportation, we will be able to transport ourselves over great distances, in a matter of micro seconds, we may even be able to transport ourselves between planets at the speed of light. In my view, cloning is really a technology that human kind can live without, but space travel and colonization is a necessity that needs to be explored and researched.

Firewall: Hardware vs Software

Posted: January 25, 2011 in Uncategorized

A hardware firewall is a small metal box filled with plug openings, or ports. You hook your computer network into the box then set it up on your computer, just as you would a new printer or other peripheral. Because it’s not physically on your machine, a hardware firewall is less vulnerable than a software firewall.

Hardware firewalls are important because they provide a strong degree of protection from most forms of attack coming from the outside world.

Software firewalls give you the level of protection you need to keep safe from hackers and other unwanted intrusions because software is far easier for computer novices to customize. The features are suited to smaller home networks.

One obvious downside to software firewalls is that they can only protect the machine they’re installed on, so if you have multiple, you need to buy, install, and configure a software firewall separately on each machine. Software firewalls generally offer the best measure of protection against certain types of situations like Trojan programs or e-mail worms. Whether you end up using a software firewall or a hardware firewall, you shouldalways supplement it with anti-virus software.

Viruses, worms and Trojan Horses are all malicious programs that can cause damage to your computer, but there are differences among the three, and knowing those differences can help you to better protect your computer from their often damaging effects.

What Is a Virus?

A computer virus attaches itself to a program or file enabling it to spread from one computer to another, leaving infections as it travels. Like a human virus, a computer virus can range in severity: some may cause only mildly annoying effects while others can damage your hardware, software or files.

People continue the spread of a computer virus, mostly unknowingly, by sharing infecting files or sending e-mails with viruses as attachments in the e-mail.

What Is a Worm?

A worm is similar to a virus by design and is considered to be a sub-class of a virus. Worms spread from computer to computer, but unlike a virus, it has the capability to travel without any human action. A worm takes advantage of file or information transport features on your system, which is what allows it to travel unaided.

What Is a Trojan horse?

The Trojan Horse, at first glance will appear to be useful software but will actually do damage once installed or run on your computer.  When a Trojan is activated on your computer, the results can vary. Some Trojans are designed to be more annoying than malicious (like changing your desktop, adding silly active desktop icons) or they can cause serious damage by deleting files and destroying information on your system. Unlike viruses and worms, Trojans do not reproduce by infecting other files nor do they self-replicate.

Combating Viruses, Worms and Trojan Horses

The first step in protecting your computer from any malicious there is to ensure that your operating system (OS) is up-to-date. This is essential if you are running a Microsoft Windows OS. Secondly, you need to have anti-virus software installed on your system and ensure you download updates frequently to ensure your software has the latest fixes for new viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. Additionally, you want to make sure your anti-virus program has the capability to scan e-mail and files as they are downloaded from the Internet and you also need to run full disk scans periodically. This will help prevent malicious programs from even reaching your computer. You should also install a firewall as well.

Software refers to the coding and various programs that you have on your computer. These include our operating system (Windows etc), media players, Photoshop etc, while computer hardware refers to the actual components of our computer. Such things as the computer’s motherboard, its CPU, the video card, the keyboard and mouse. Both of them are vital for any computer to operate, and they are also dependent on one another.

Computer hardware is usually multi-purpose in that it is able to perform lots of different tasks. For instance, your computer monitor doesn’t just display images on-screen; it also shows videos, widgets and text whereas software is normally only designed to perform one task.

Occasionally a piece of software will have additional requirements, and these will normally be printed on the box when you purchase it, or else it will be displayed on the website you have downloaded it from.

Both computer software and computer hardware are being constantly developed, with superior components and programs being released all the time. The development of hardware is usually focused on creating faster and more compact components through the use of new technology.

      →

Meanwhile, developers of software are constantly striving to keep pace with these new advancements in hardware by building smoother running, better looking and more comprehensive programs.

Within the last two decades , the Internet  became one of the most popular and demanded technological innovations  which are currently used by billions of people throughout the world . It  is impossible to deny the fact that the technology  has had a huge impact  on our life , but should its influence be considered as something more  positive than negative , or vice versa ?

On the positive side:

With all of the advances and the new technology there are many positive things that can be accomplished. We can shop online, connect with our friends and family, learn, explore and be more creative..

Animals were the only modes of transport in the olden days. Technology was the driving force behind the creation and design of the modern-day automobiles. The idea of having four-wheeled modes of transport gave rise to the creation of cars. Modes of air and water transport came up, thanks to technology.
Technology has evolved to an extent where machines can perform tasks that are physically inaccessible to man. The use of advanced technologies like robotics and artificial intelligence has proved helpful in life-risking tasks like mining and space exploration

Finally, the Internet has opened a new epoch in entertaining industry allowing people to watch new movies, concerts or theater performances, visit museums and galleries, or even virtually travel throughout the world.

On the negative side:

Unfortunately, with great things and the great technology there are negatives that come with it. Like an old man once said,”one day when technology would hover, humans would stop thinking before acting”, Every second that passes by is making us even more dependent on technology. We no longer meet our loved ones in person, who may be living in the same town as we are, Instead, we call, chat, or e-mail them. The Internet as a technological phenomenon has some serious drawbacks. Those include, first of all, spamming and a threat of receiving computer viruses, stealing important personal information of Internet users, as well as Internet addiction and various concerns connected with children using the Internet.

Undoubtedly, It is obvious that the development of technology is connected with a number of great positive changes and new opportunities for all of us.

Radical changes will occur in the way we as humans interact with technology.

The network is the lifeblood and I believe we have just barely scratched the surface of what the network will do in the future. In a few years there will be billions of new Internet inhabitants. innovation it’s often connecting the dots in new and unique ways, New ways to use the network, for example, or new ways to communicate or to collaborate

Microsoft is rumored to be working on an “Xphone” that will use a “Vista-tized” version of their mobile Windows. An inside source exclusive reports that a prototype exists that “blows the doors off” the iPhone, and is fully Windows XP/Vista Compatible. It is rumored that this runs on a special Sony prototype phone. there have been rumors surrounding a version of Windows that would run on a next generation version of the PSP platform with a built in phone, and retaining the UMD drive. If this ultimately results in real shipping products – the combination of Windows on the PSP, retaining its game and movie catalog, could transform the PSP into a massive platform – add in a killer phone capability, along with everything else that the PSP can already do – and you have a platform that can regain the market from Apple, and eclipse Google, in a single step!

New technology has been injected into the workplace at an exponentially increasing rate over the last few years. Many companies see new technology as the means to increase profit margins and to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

New technology has opened a door of opportunities for companies and employees willing to explore non-traditional work arrangements. Many  organizations allow employees to work at home occasionally because of new technology. This technology also allows a new kind of team to emerge. Virtual teams can be formed, bringing together the best people regardless of location and time . E-mail, teleconferencing, video conferencing, and new emerging technologies are enabling people around the world to communicate and collaborate rapidly and efficiently.

dangers of technology

The personal computer. Specifically, way it interacts with the human brain. There has always been a tendency among children, elementary-school teachers to think in simple terms of right and wrong, in checklists and keywords and similar boxes. It’s a way of avoiding thinking.

Technology as amazing as it is, is really a good thing but have some of the dangers which I’ve seen, read, or heard about.

1. There may be a link between cell phone use and tumors.

2. Using cell phones and texting while driving may very likely cause an accident.

3. Cyber-bullying and cyber-stalking take place frequently. Along with this is the possibility of encountering Internet predators. Children may also accidentally (or purposely) see inappropriate material on the Internet. Parents must be vigilant.

4. Internet addiction can occur. Studies have show that, while not an official disorder, there are cases where excessive computer use interferes with a person’s daily activity. Other studies have shown a link between Internet addiction and ADHD and depression in teens.

5. Technology, especially video games, makes people less active. Lack of exercise can lead to obesity which leads to a variety of diseases.

Parents, students, and teachers need to be aware of these dangers as well as others that may exist. Limiting the use of technology may be necessary for the health and welfare of all.

On the other hand, many civil liberations and technologist say the chips actually are more of an advantage for thieves, stalkers and hackers, for instance anyone with the proper devise could download an individual”tms biographical information and a digital photo from only several feet away.

Technology is changing practically every day, and each new day seems to bring a new technological device. The latest thing in the technological world? Wearable electronics. The idea of wearing technology might sound strange, but it’s becoming a reality. From dresses that have phones built into them to other phones that you can wear on your wrist like a bracelet.

Smart wearable devices are sensors that are designed to help and provide services to dependent persons. They offer new possibilities and create new challenges as a result of the information that they supply quickly, reliably, and securely. As wireless technologies and ubiquitous computing continue to unfold, network sensors, communication data networks, mobile devices and smart wearable devices make it possible to create intelligent environments and assist with long distance medical care.

Think of the possibilities when it comes to travel and business applications. Wearable computing and other forms of technology could become the norm in just a few years, allowing people to free up their hands so they can greet others, handle presentations, and otherwise perform normal, daily activities. They wouldn’t have to carry a lot of things around, but they would still have all they needed when they arrived at their destination. That would be a great way to travel, and would cut down on things like fees for baggage on the airlines.
